could someone please clarify if vista basic and premium have facilities for peer to peer networking? i have ultimate at present but don't want to pay for ultimate unless i really have to.

All versions of Vista can handle Limewire and other P2P software/connections equally well, if that's what you are asking. (Just keep in mind that most of the content is illegal, so watch what you download.) None of them, to my knowledge, have built-in P2P networking clients, though.

no i don't mean p2p but just home networking between my three machines at home. i want to be able to share files and resources like printers.

Ah, I gotcha now. The Home editions do not have the same level of networking capabilities as Ultimate does (it, for instance, lacks the Remote Desktop Connection feature), but you can still network the computers together, sharing files, printers, etc. between them as you wish.
