Networking problems

Nov 27, 2004 5:59PM PST

I am trying to network two computers with Windows XP for the purpose of file sharing. When I use the office notebook to access the home desktop, it brings up a login window and once past that I can only access certain folders on the shared drive. When I use the desktop to access files on the notebook, it also brings up the login window but no matter what I enter it won't allow me to login and access anything. Please help.

When I want to access files or folders on my network, I go to "My Network Places' and all shared items are listed. Have you tried that?

Are these XP Pro, Home or one of each? If Pro, do you use "Simple file sharing"? How do you logon? If SP2, what are the firewall settings? They need to have exceptions for printer and file sharing set. You can usually avoid login requirements on a remote PC by defining the user/password for that person and setting the appropriate permissions. Otherwise, the login (not using simple file sharing) will require you to enter a valid user/password. Hope that gives something to go on.

More than likely you need to turn off any firewalls you have on.
XP has a builtin firewall and don't run ZONEALARM.
Even when it is off it seems to screw things up.
