Networking Problem: File Sharing

Nov 18, 2004 10:17PM PST

I am using Dlink wireless router DI-524 to share internet between a desktop and a laptop. Both computers have Windows XP service pack 2. The desktop is connected to the router with cable and the laptop is wireless. I don't have any problem sharing the internet, but cannot share the files. I tried network setup wizard but did not see both computers on the network. I also tried to turn off the firewall but it came back once I restart the computer.

Hope to get some help from you guys. Thanks.

Check that the workgroup name is the same for both computers, then set some folders to be shared.

Both the desktop & laptop have same workgroup name. I do not even see the two computers under the same workgroup.

Try the Search feature in the Start Menu, choose the other computer by name or by IP address.

If that doesn't work try the Ping command for a positive response.

I tried to turn off firewall many times through firewall settings, but everytime I restart the computers it came back. Do you know any other way to turn it off ? Thanks.

I made another post in answer to a similar question earlier today, but you need to verify that you don't have XP's firewall turned on and that you have File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks checked.

For a step by step on how to get File Sharing working, see this tutorial:
