Question

Networking problem

May 2, 2019 11:59AM PDT

I have installed and configured a home network using a TP-Link Archer C7 router with a main computer (Wired to the router), a Dell Optiplex 7050 Desktop running Windows 10 Professional 64 bit and a Dell Inspiron 14 5000 series Laptop (wireless) running Windows 10 Home edition 64 bit.
From the Inspiron Laptop, I am able to see and access the Optiplex Desktop, but from the Desktop I cannot see the Laptop at all.

Any advice or suggestions on how to get the wired pc to see the Laptop?

I am not an expert but I can follow directions well, Please help.

Thank you.

Answer
That's normal.

There are a few reasons for another PC not to show. From a long standing issue with the Network Neighborhood (still somewhat broken after 3 decades (1995!) to firewalls in your router to finally PCs should not show if there is nothing shared.

There is no step by step here because it's rarely the same cause.

Both computers can access the internet, I have disabled the firewall and I am sharing everything on both since I am the only user of these machines.
Also both computers can see the other one when I use Teamviewer to connect.
When I click on the Network icon on the Laptop, the Desktop is there; When I click on the network icon on the Desktop, the Laptop is not there.

I will try anything at this point.

You altered the deal. You don't have stock setups so I can't predict what will occur with Teamviewer and what else is not stock.

These are facts:
1. Network Neighborhood has been unreliable since about 1995.
2. A PC does not show if it has nothing shared.
3. Firewalls in routers can make a mess of this. I showed examples many times and have one in the Networking sticky.
4. There are workarounds but Microsoft changed network shares again recently (no more homegroup.) https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4091368/windows-10-homegroup-removed shares this along with how to setup a printer or folder share. ALL THE SAME RULES APPLY TO GET THIS WORKING. Firewall, opening a command prompt to run NET VIEW etc.

You are on old grounds here but as your PC isn't stock, you may have other issues.
