Question

networking paradox

Aug 29, 2011 6:25PM PDT

My network consists of two desktops, an xbox360, a wireless router, a wireless printer, and a laptop which connects through either wi-fi or ethernet depending on the circumstances. Both desktops and the xbox connect to the router through ethernet cables with an extra for the laptop (or other device). This setup worked perfectly when my internet came to my router via ethernet cable. Now however it comes directly to one of the desktops through a usb 3g device. The computer that has this device is running on windows 7, it is homegroup joined and communicates flawlessly with everything on the network( including the other desktop which is running xp pro). Until I enable ICS on the 3g device and set the adapter that connects to the home network as my home networking connection. At this point network and sharing center re-identifies my home network as "unidentified network(work network)" and loses all connectivity with the entire network, as well as not passing along the internet connection!?! Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as I need this network functional for my work. Thanks in advance for all your help.-D

If it worked, why change it?

As you've found, networking THROUGH a PC is full of holes and problems.

I recently had to move, this 3g card is the only reliable high speed connection I can get in my new location.

I figured out how to work this, all I had to do was run a second ethernet cable from the pc with the 3g device to the routers internet in port, I then enabled ICS for the 3g device and set the second ethernet adapter as private networking connection, and I now have full functionality, as well as a spiffy network location trifecta in network and sharing center
