Networking Newb

Apr 5, 2017 7:32PM PDT

Work related question. We have a Desktop that is connected to our intranet here at work. I have a laptop that controls my microscope. I need to transfer data from the laptop to the desktop many times a day. Use of a flash drive is getting old. -The desktop is hard wired to our intranet.
-I have only one network port(cat5) on the desktop. In use now for intranet connection.
-Desktop has a static IP address so we can remote often.
-Laptop cannot be hooked directly to work network unless I add all the security stuff which I don't want to do.

So my question is how can I network them locally not giving access. I need to maintain the static IP of the desktop so users can remote to it. I am a complete newb at networking.
Thanks in advance.

this seems like a a pretty easy way to go. I checked out local "amazon" website called Gmarket.com and didn's see one in english. I'll hvae to get someone to search in Korean.

adding a network card is within the realm of possibilities but one cable would be nice.

Otherwise I did find USB to Cat 5 adapters. i guess I should be able to go network card on laptop to usb on the desktop right?

PC Transfer Cables

USB to USB direct line transfer cables do exist. I would link to one, but the link would be removed. Do a search for them and you will be able to just run a cable to the laptop and hit a button.

Yes thanks. Our versino of amazon here I was unable to find USB to USB while searching in Englsh. I found someone to help and search in Korea. We found the proper cable and it should be here today. Meanwhile I was totally destroyed by the network monitors trying to connect via our intranet. Hand smacked I stopped until I get the proper cable. 8*)
