Question

Networking issues

Mar 22, 2016 4:16PM PDT

Hi all,

I've been experiencing some pretty severe network issues since moving into my new place; supposedly, I should be receiving a minimum of 10mbs/2mbs up/down. At best, I'm getting around 5% of that (500 kb/s). All routers have been replaced, a service technician has tested the line and has verified this is the minimum speed. All routers and cables have been replaced within the past month. I'm at my wits' end with what to do. Any help would be much appreciated Laugh
Thanks,
Riatin

Sorry, I should mention this is an ADSL 2+ connection serviced by Telstra.

Turn off the ADSL modem, Pick up your phone, press a number, listen. Do you hear some static? If so, get the phone company out to switch you to a clear phone line or find something in the pole box that's grounding out the signal, like a wasp nest (the most common problem here in past, but now I have optic cable for everything and it's great).

Hi James,

I've already checked this. There's no static on the line, and the pole box is clear of obstructions. As I mentioned before, the technician was able to achieve speeds of over 10mb/s while plugged into the main telephone line inside the house, which the router is normally plugged into. What I'd like to know is what could account for the discrepancy between his testing unit and the router speeds.

using CAT cable from ADSL to computer?
Mar 22, 2016 6:15PM PDT

Make sure it's not a crossover type. Most modems now adjust for that mistake, but maybe not all. Do you have the filters plugged into the phone jacks? Check user settings in the router to see if they've been set or throttled to a low shared speed for all users? For instance on my modem/router I can set my kid's connection to be slower so I have the rest of the speed, or I can limit the speed so all share at the same speed, a fraction of the max speed.

using CAT cable from ADSL to computer?
Mar 22, 2016 6:56PM PDT

Hi James,

Filters are all correctly configured, and it's a new CAT cable, which matches up to the output on the router. The router is new and there are no throttling settings configured as yet.

turn off all antivirus programs, malware programs and then test speed to trusted sites. If it runs correctly, then you need to look at what might be causing the AV program to slow it down, or maybe need a different one.

I had a new router that was dog slow on WiFi. Turns out the maker had a firmware update to address connections with certain WiFI cards. Your post omits a lot of details.

Hi R. Profitt,

It's not a WiFi problem; all connections to the router are wired. FYI, the model is a Technicolor TG797nV3.

My example was only that.

Some new devices had issues that only are addressed by the firmware. It's something I check everytime I'm on such a call.

why is it called technicolor?

made in Viet Nam. If the tech had no problem with it, then it's your computer, and that's either hardware or software. Hardware would be LAN port and it's chip having a problem, so USB LAN is needed. Software would be installing the correct driver file for the LAN port's chip.
