Question

Networking issue on Hotwire installation

Feb 10, 2015 11:24AM PST

I recently had Hotwire installed in my home and removed my Comcast system. Part of my network includes a remote hard drive that I move downloaded movies to watch later. I had the network working on the Comcast system but haven't been able to in the new Hotwire install. Here is the configuration:

ZXHN F688 PON ONT home gateway (Hotwire)
Numerous Computers connected wirelessly
home gateway has 4 LAN connections. I was told that I could use LAN2 and LAN3
My computer is wired and connected to LAN3
A Netgear WNDR3400V2 is connected to LAN2
The Netgear is a wireless router but is only being used as a switch/server (not sure if this is the correct terminology).
The reason I am using the Netgear is that it has a USB and a hard drive can be connected to it. I am using it to move movies I download from the internet to the hard drive using ReadyShare.
Also connected to the Netgear is a Sony N-200 Streaming Media Player.
Once the movies are on the drive, I move the USB to the Sony and watch the movies.
I fixed the IP address of the Netgear to 192.168.1.21 which is in the range for LAN2.
When I log into the router (192.168.1.1) I cannot see the Netgear.
The wirelessly connected devices can see the Netgear.
The only way I can see the Netgear is if I plug my computer into the Netgear instead of the router.
It will work for a while but then my connection to the internet slows and it seams like it creates a conflict somehow (not explaining this well but if I run a speedtest, the signal is very erratic).

Can someone suggest a configuration that might work. Do I need to modify the settings in the Hotwire Gateway or the Netgear to get them to work together.

Thanks,

Dwight

Clarification Request
Is the netgear a WAP or Router?

I don't expect the Netgear to play along if it's connected in any way on the Netgear's WAN port.

Network setup
Feb 11, 2015 12:13AM PST

I think I have it set up as a router (heavy emphasis on "think"). I have the wireless function on it turned off. I don't have any network cables plugged into the WAN port. I have the Sony N-200 plugged into the Netgear LAN1 and a cable from the Netgear LAN2 to the Hotwire gateway LAN2.

When I list the allocated addresses from the Hotwire app typing 192.168.1.1 on the browser, the Netgear isn't listed but the Sony has been assigned 192.168.1.11.

I'd recheck the Netgear.

Google "How to use a router as a WAP" and yes you turned off the Netgear's WiFi but if it's still a router the DHCP could create trouble. My bet is a simple switched hub and NAS box (which you plug in your HDD) would be easier.

Something if the netgear can't be configured.

Transporter Sync Private Cloud has a few models. Some folk write "The software does NOT work with windows 98, XP, or VISTA" so there's that but no one at the office runs those OSes.

Today a new router shows up so I'll be busy changing to that.

Just to clarify, the HDD is an external USB drive

I was hoping to avoid buying another hard drive and use the one I have.

2 ideas.

Be sure of your Netgear setup.
Look at the various models of the Transporter Sync Private Cloud as one takes an external drive.

New configuration
Feb 11, 2015 11:49AM PST

I disabled DHCP on the Netgear and plugged it from one of it's LAN ports into LAN3 on the Hotwire gateway and gave it an ip of 192.168.21 which is in the range of LAN3. I plugged my computer into LAN2 of Hotwire gateway and it has been assigned an ip of 192.168.1.11, My wireless are all given ips in the 192.168.1.4x range. All the wireless and my wired connection see each other and the internet. My wireless see the Netgear and can log into it but I can't see it or log into it. When I log into Netgear from my iPad and do a network map, it sees everyone but my wired computer - 192.168.1.11. I also disabled UpnP as was recommended by another Forum.

Any suggestions or other configurations to try?

I will look into the Transporter option but I would like to try to get the Netgear working because it did work fine on the Comcast network.

A mystery to me.

It sounds right but no go.

"gave it an ip of 192.168.21"

That's a typo so I can't see if you gave it a 2.1 address which would allow the switched hub to work but cause the NAS feature to fail.
