networking and file sharing computers

Oct 3, 2008 7:58PM PDT

I just got a new HP computer and liked it to our network. I cannot see other computers on the network nor can they see my computer even though I have given permission to file share. Windows and HP cannot figure out what is wrong nor are they willing to help. Can someone tell me how to properly link my computer to the network so I can file share. Im running Vista, XP and a Mac. No problems with the Mac and XP

Thanks

Just ideas.

1. In our Networking forum sticky we note the need for the LLTD (google that) responder.
2. Many don't want to know about accounts, permissions or that nutty thing about making the share AFTER you create accounts. For those that don't want to deal with accounts, permissions and firewalls I suggest they use NETWORK MAGIC (google that.)

If you have Ultimate, Enterprise or Business do this:

1. Open the Run command and type "secpol.msc".
2. Press "continue" when prompted by Vista.
3. Click on "Local Policies" --> "Security Options"
4. Navigate to the policy "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level" and open it.
5. By default Windows Vista sets the policy to "NTVLM2 responses only". Change this to "LM and NTLM ? use NTLMV2
session security if negotiated".
6. Restart the computer.

Now, do this:
Control Panel
Network
Setup file Sharing
Under Sharing and Discovery, turn File Sharing and Printer Sharing On.
