Networking a DVD writer

Nov 17, 2006 5:44AM PST

I have a standard wireless home network (gateway, cable modem) and a couple of (Windows XP) computers connected to the (Belkin) gateway. I'd like to connect a DVD writer (probably an HP 840) to the network (as a network resource), rather than directly to one of the computers (and then sharing).

What's the best way to do this?

Can I do it with an external writer, or an internal and a network storage adapter?

Also, what are some hardware recommendations?

Given the 100 megabit limit...

I would never do this. USB 2.0 connection would be the lowest speed connection I'd ever use.

So is switching between computers the most efficient method?

Should I just suck it up and plug into one or the other depending on what I need to copy/back up?

That's what USB 2.0 would be good for. Imagine...

Over the ethernet you top out (most networks) at 100 megabit. USB 2.0 is 4 times that. Even copying 4GB over 100 megabit ethernet via FTP (low overhead) will test most people's patience. I didn't broach the subject of software issues of the DVD network recorder.
