Over at www.wown.com is the setup pages for this. But I'm sharing I'd not bother since ethernet cards and cables cost me less than the needed parallel cable.

You sure?

You can do it, very VERY slowly (as in what the connection will be). You need a crossover aka datalink cable (from paralell to paralell), plug it in, set up file sharing on the 95 box, share files and your XP box.
The cable cost 15 to 20 dollars (in Texas anyway), but as I say you will have a connection that makes snails look like Indie cars. You might consider acouple of network cards (well PCMCIA card for your laptop) instead. Even the wireless are cheep now, and you wouldnt have to watch 1 or the other time out when you need them not to - It would even save you the time it takes to drive to the church, go to Confession and atone for all the words you called your computers!

what's the solution
Jul 6, 2007 3:05PM PDT

I have looked and looked, but either I am not smart enough or unable to find the correct instructions.

Can anyone tell me how to setup a network between a windows 95 computer and a windows xp computer. I am trying to migrate some files from an old laptop before giving it to my 2 year old as a toy. The windows 95 has ethernet connection, and can connect to the internet when plugged into my 2-wire home modem (model 2701HG-B I think). The windows XP computer is a laptop that I normally connect to the internet wirelessly, but can connect to the modem with a cable if need be.

I am looking for the fastest, most cost effective method of transferring these files, but can't figure out how to get the networks connected. Does anyone have any advice?

Today I use an USB Hard Disk case.

It's from 8.99 to 29 bucks and gets the move done in minutes. No network headaches at all.

If you just want to migrate some files:

e-mail them (zipped if necessary). Both external hard disk and USB-stick aren't supported by Windows 95.

A network (set it up using the XP Home network setup wizard, that will produce a diskette for the 95 machine to do the setup there) only makes sense for a permanent connection.

Here's how I use the USB External Drive case in 95.

I remove the hard disk and put it in the drive case. We plug that into the XP machine and copy out the files.

I guess I will do that then

I was hoping for a faster solution, but I think you are right Kees and I will just have to e-mail all the files to myself.

I appreciate the input.

Network

Bob gave you the answer in his post.

forget
Parallel/Serial ports, too slow
USB ports, unreliable

Hwd needed

Wireless Router.
NIC card for Win98 system
Cat 5 or 6 patch cables.

Read link for set-up and Security. Untill you understand some of the proceedures of networking and security no one can help you.

Not trying to be mean but I spent 3 months setting up my first network. Why... forgot that the Hwd end of Networking was the easy part.

inexpensive server
Sep 15, 2005 3:42AM PDT

If you really want a separate server and you have an older computer around, you can make a server at very little cost: Build It: A Home Linux Server

You might be wasting your money on a separate file/print/Internet server if all you want to do is share files, a printer, and an Internet connection. You can use your Powerspec 6340 with the already installed Windows XP as a server. Just connect all computers to a broadband router (preferably one with wireless capability) and enable file and printer sharing on your desktop computer. If you need more storage just add a second HD to the desktop and share it.

The only drawback is that you have to have your desktop turned on whenever another computer wants to use a shared printer or access the shared files. The Internet connection does not necessarily require the server to be turned on for it to be shared--that can be done by the router, alone.

All you have to purchase is a router (wired or wireless). Something like a Linksys WRT54G. Some other popular brands are D-Link, Netgear, and Belkin.

Do you still want a stand-alone server?
