Network sharing internet access

Feb 11, 2004 12:25AM PST

Hi everyone,
Forgive my ignorance in the small network area. I'm learning ( with lot's of help from ya'll)!

My issue:
I'm have a small network. 2 PC's running XP pro. A notebook running XP Pro. and a third PC running ME. The network runs through a router. All file sharing etc. is going well.

I now want to add internet access to the network. Currently the internet access we have is dial up. Two of the computors have modems. Two do not. The file server does not. Can all the computers access the internet through the router or does each one need it's own separate modem? And what process would I follow to set this up?

Any help is greatly appreciated! Hope all is well with the team. you guys are the best!

Gordon

With this many PCs on the LAN, a shared dial up connection will be stretched thin. Basically one computer would be set up as a gateway using it's built-in Internet Connection Sharing software(need 98E or higher). The routers setting would need to be changed from a gateway to a router. Broadband works much better in this situation.

you can use XP's internet sharing feature. By selecting the properties of your dial-up connection you will find sharing. Enable it on one of your computer. But it must have an static ip. Then on the other computers you must give the ip as their gateway. This can be done by selecting the properties of local area network conection icon.

good luck
