Network Printer on Macbook

May 20, 2008 3:43AM PDT

There are many similar threads to this that I have read, but I have not found an answer. I have a Dell Desktop running XP connected to a Linksys router. Also, there is a Canon MX700 connected to the router via ethernet. I would like to set this up so that both the Mac and PC can print to the Canon over the network.

The Dell prints fine to the Canon, but when I try to enter the IP address of the printer (192.168 etc.) into the macbook, things do not work. A window comes up saying "192.168... is busy. Will try again in 20 seconds".

I don't know if I am doing something stupid but any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Can you confirm that you have the OS X drivers for this printer installed on your MacBook?

What happens when you try to add the printer? Does the printer name appear in the "Add a Printer" window?

The printer doesn't

appear in the add a printer window so my guess is that it is not being detected. Where do I go from there?
And thanks for the reply.

You didn't cover the driver question.

Do you have the Canon driver installed on the Mac?

What other OS X installation instructions are there with this printer?

How about seeing if you can make this printer work when it is directly connected to the Mac?

That would eliminate the possibility of Mac/Printer incompatibility.

Well,

I downloaded the drivers off the Canon website, and connected it via usb. It prints fine when directly connected. Any ideas?

Now that you know,

that it prints when directly connected to the Mac, go ahead and assign a static IP address to the printer and attach it to the network.

Following any instructions from Canon regarding Networking their printer, attempt to attach to the printer across the network.

I have an HP LJ400 which is connected in the same way as your Canon will be, and it works well.
