Network password

by peterhogarth / May 7, 2004 1:49 AM PDT

PC is Athlon 1800+ with Windows ME 560mB memory IE6.

I have recently upgraded from dial up cable to cable broadband. Since the upgrade I get a request for a password during start up. This only happens when the modem is on during start. Can this be avoided. The PC is on its own and not intentionaly networked. Also some memorised password and logon info does not work , with a remark message saying this is not memorised for networked PC's

While you could remove the MS Client in the control panel, most will not be happy that all passwords to things like email and more will not be remembered.

The usual fix is to ..

1. Delete the .PWL files in C:\Windows
2. In the network control panel, set the logon to Windows.
3. Ok your way out, reboot.
4. For the last time, enter a name and click OK. Do not touch the password or cancel box or you go to step 1.

Thanks for lightening reply.

Does your fix have any adverse effects for a single user and are all "remembered" passwords still functional?
Many thanks Peter

Can't test that.

I have no Windows ME machines to test for such.

Sorry, but Windows ME was banned at the Office (didn't run our business apps) and the last ME box at home zigged when it should have zagged so it's on Windows 2000.

I use this fix all the time and no one has complained. I see others offer the removal of MS Client and I can assure you that will cause passwords to vanish.
