Network not recognized by desktop PC

Mar 29, 2006 4:32AM PST

I am new to wireless networking. I am trying to share files between my 2 computers but they do not recognize each other on the network. My desktop is running windows xp home edition, laptop is Gateway running windows xp media center edition; they are connected by a linksys WRT54G wireless router; I have a dsl modem westell 2200. Both connect to the internet easily, I have run the network setup wizard on both systems. On the desktop, I can't find my network places. On the laptop-when I try to view other computer in my workgroup, nothing shows up. I tried even after disabling my firewalls.

Help!

Do you mean to say that your start menu on the desktop doesn't have My Network Places? If this is the case, R-click the start button and select properties, click start menu tab, customize, advanced tab, scroll down and check the box My Network places. Now, from command prompt type, ipconfig /all and post the results here.

What is the IP Configuration of the other computer? Didn't you state that this is a wireless network? The adapter shown is Ethernet which would require a cable to your router.

a checklist
Mar 30, 2006 5:33AM PST

- Workgroup name is EXACTLY the same on each computer
- share a folder on each computer
- tell personal firewalls on each computer to allow connections from a trusted IP range. (This is automatically done for you with some firewalls.)

What personal firewall do you have installed? ZoneAlarm, McAfee, Norton Internet Security, Windows XP firewall, other?
