...don't have a HDD built in- they also connect to something externally like you have now. Usually this is USB flash drives or externals.
So it would be a trade off, essentially. You would however gain back your laptop for other purposes. FWIW, I currently use a WD TV Live, but they do sell one with a built in HDD ("WD TV Live Hub"). See here:

Hey all - I'm wondering if there is such thing as a network media hard drive. Basically an external network hard drive with an hdmi output that will play my high def video files on my tv. It would also need to be large capacity (at least 1TB, preferably 2TB).
Or, is there something totally different that will enable me to accomplish the same thing? I would like to upgrade my current setup in which I have to connect me laptop to my external hard drive, then run an hdmi cable from my laptop to the tv. What is the best way of simplifying this setup?
