Network connection stopped working when upgrade to XP

Mar 30, 2005 12:47AM PST

This one has me scratching my head. I upgraded my OS to XP from win2k on my Compaq from work. It was a 2 year old machine with an corporate image and off the books, so I decided to rid myself of all the unnecessary automated scripts. So now the network shows unplugged, but the madge nic card is working properly. Suspecting some kind of security device which disabled the network connection, I did the following:

1) pulled the nic: uninstalled the driver, reinstalled XP, disabled and re-enabled. Nothing

2) put in another nic card, first in slot 1, then slot 2, then with both nic cards.

3) Device manager shows them working properly

4) Confirmed my cables are working by plugging them into another computer.

Any ideas?

What about system drivers?

Some require motherboard drivers. Have you looked for such?

Motherboard drivers?
Mar 30, 2005 1:33AM PST

not sure how to do that.

Me either. Here's why.

Many can't see the forum tip which asks for relevant information. Since many don't follow the tip or can't see it, I can only note what it could be without actually offering a link to said drivers.

So here's the tip so forum members can help you -> Tip: If you are asking for help to troubleshoot a computer-related problem, please be sure to include all the necessary information (ie: operating system, model number, hardware, software, etc) that will help others identify your problem for a speedy resolution.

Here's what I know ...

The computer is a corporate compaq with no model number, but uses a ACPI uniprocessor (motherboard?), Pent 4, 2.4ghz, loaded with XP Pro

The nic card is a Madgesmart 100/16/4 PCI Ringnode with mdgndis5.sys driver. I also tried another madge 16/4. Madge site says this driver current and is compatible with XP.

Both devices are working properly in the device manager. I've compared my network settings to another XP on my home network and they match. I'm using a Linksys router and have tried plugging in with 2 different cat 5 cables which work elsewhere.

Anything else I can check?

It has a model number. If you can't share, I can't do much.

Try BELARC ADVISOR.

I've fixed such hundreds of times (maybe more), but without the make/model, I know better than to do much else other than find the make/model of the laptop.

Model number (I guess)

Believe me, I looked. It says Evo on the front and has a compaq tag the says D515/P2-4/14549k US. And the serial number w304kn9xq129. That's all - there's nothing more than what I've already provided.

I tried Belarc

and it tells me that it is a Compaq Evo 510 SSF with a Compaq bios 686O2 v. 214 8/15/02

There is one thing you never wrote. Desktop or laptop.

It's a desktop - I installed drivers, no luck
Mar 30, 2005 5:06AM PST

I installed the latest compatible drivers from Madge and then went to the site you suggested and updated with the Intel chipset and all of the listed bios, but still not showing a network connection.

I'm tempted to pull both nic cards and go buy a newer one!

When I reach this point, I... boot KNOPPIX.
Mar 30, 2005 5:16AM PST

Having a KNOPPIX boot CD helps me figure out if the cards and such are functional.

thanks for all your help

And nailed too.

This exercise also benefited you since you were able to find and install the drivers I always find "missing."

I think you'll have a lot more fun now.

patrickjd78, is the forum tip not showing when you post?

You didn't answer and with all the posts that don't seem to see it, I just wonder if you could tell if you see it.
