Network

I am very new at this.

I have a cable network with two computers on it using a Linksys five port hub. One is named Master and the other is named Able.

Master ran Win98SE and Able runs Win85

I have removed Master and have now installed another computer runing WinXP Home.

I was told that all I have to do is to do a search to find the Able computer.

When I do a search (START,SEARCH,COMPUTER IN NETWORKS and entered Able) for a computer named Abel, it is not found.

How do I find the computer Able?

Do I need to set up a new network?

Thanks,

Bill

I see an issue.

You have some "cable network" and "a Linksys five port hub."

My bet is that you have a cable modem on that hub. Sadly this is an invalid configuration and will not find support.

Here's the supported configuration....

Cable modem to Router. PCs connect to the router.

At that point, the firewalls are configured to allow networking and you may find the other machine.

You will also have to run the network wizard in XP.

In router set up, in security, set "Exempt Computers" to enable and type in IP range. Found this out the hard way when I was setting up my 1st Network w/XP and 98.

Bob,

Thanks for the reply.

The Able computer has a PCI card (added) that allows the cable connection to the Linksys Hub. The other computer has a port built in for the cable to connect it to the hub.

Unfortunately cable is not available in this area so I do not have a cable modem attached to either computer, or the hub.

Thanks,

Bill

Then it's likely the firewall.

If the usual setup with the network wizard is done, then the network neighborhood is "WORKGROUP", and a share is made, then the machine is "seen". It's very proper for a machine that has no shares to not show on the network. Why should it?
