Question

NetVista not responding

I purchased a NetVista model# 6269 E2U a couple of months ago, it has a 600mhz Celeron processor and 512mb of ram, a 6.4gb hard drive and windows 98se. I was able to get it up and running with a few fixes and started to play a few games, it played for about an hour then froze, no response from the mouse or keyboard so I rebooted the machine and started to play my games again, about 20 minutes later it froze again so I rebooted again, this went on about 3 more times so I shut it down and removed the cover looking for a cause. Over the last couple of months I have replaced the hard drive, changed the processor, used a substitute power supply and replaced a few of the electrolytic caps. on the motherboard. Can anyone give me any more ideas on the possible problem other than a bad chip. Thanks.

Answer
At this age, all parts are suspect.

But how about the cheapest part I know of? That CMOS battery could be too low and stop booting.

This part and its effect varies with each PC but it's so cheap at under 1USD that I have to ask if you tested or replaced it.

Yes I did replace the CMOS battery.

If it boots then freezes.

That 600mhz Celeron processor is in my memory as one that would lock up when it got too hot so running for about an hour then froze is spot on for heatsink issues like missing or cracked heatsink compound. Or a failed CPU fan.

I don't know what you know about PC design and repair. Google videos about CPU heatsink installation and fan checks.

I do know my way around a soldering iron. My main concern is I don't have any info on this motherboard, can you tell me the range of processors used on this motherboard since I can only go by what is in the machine now, were there any other problems with this board that might be contributing to my problem, is there any place I can go for the info I need, I know IBM sold off a lot of their machines to Lenovo but I don't know if this was one of them. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry no.

I don't have on hand knowledge about that board and would use google to see if there was any docs or discussions.

But I did run repair shops and now help on tough cases. In this case you are dealing with now ancient hardware that may not be repairable. This can really upset some but replacements at on many recycle sites like Craigslist, Ebay and Freecycle.

Good hunting.
