Question

Netgear C3700 Unstable & Channel Lock Status

Dec 30, 2014 5:35AM PST

This is a modem-router combo. Main PC is connected by ethernet cable and doesn't seem to lose connection, but Day of Defeat game periodically freezes and jumps during the game for a split second—about 4 times a minute. Wifi connected devices periodically lose connection for short periods or get "unable to connect to the internet" errors, which fix themselves with or without going thru troubleshooting apparently citing network issues. When I go to the IP address on line, Netgear said the cable connection boot state should be operational (it is blank), the configuration file should be complete (it is blank), and the upstream and downstream channels should be locked (they are all blank). Netgear said to contact the ISP (Cox) and see if they were using the proper configuration file for this model. Cox said they were and reset everything, but everything is still blank and Day of Defeat is still jerky. Does it matter if these things are blank and will that cause the performance issues I am seeing? Netgear said to take this one back and exchange for a new one. Will that make a difference?

Not sure what you mean.

I play it connected by ethernet. Not sure how do disable the wifi or how that would change the ethernet connection. Also, I got a replacement, same model, and the same issues persist.

Looks not to be a modem-router problem
Dec 31, 2014 5:40AM PST

Thanks for that. I hooked up my old modem without any wifi--connecting to the PC by ethernet. The game used to work fine with the old modem, but I still got the same problem when I hooked it back up today. At this point I have no clue what the problem is, but I am guessing it is not the C3700.

Answer
OK, try another DNS.

Try 8.8.4.4 and run NAMEBENCH to see which DNS is faster.

Finally Gave Up, Using Old Modem & Router
Jan 17, 2015 11:33PM PST

Numerous calls and chats with Netgear and my ISP (Cox), as well as multiple forum posts and internet searches, resulted in no improvement in stopping the dropped wireless connection issues or my unstable game play. I fiddled with many adjustments. I most recently tried to reserve an IP address and had Cox come out and check the lines. Neither made any difference. I am not PC/Network literate, but I think it might have had something to do with the up channel. the light kept blinking but both Netgear and Cox said it was not a problem. Cox did say they had had some problems with modem-router combos (he did not single out the C3700). I bought the C3700 at Staples and they won't take it back after 14 days, it was a Christmas present bought 14 days before Christmas, so I have an expensive paper weight. I have gone back and am using my old DOCSIS 2.0 modem and Dlink router and everything is working fine again. I am very sorry I bought this Netgear device--it was a total waste of time and money. Sad

I hear you.

ISPs may have system issues with other than their modems. It's a shame you had to learn this first hand. It's not popular but I don't subscribe to the notion we should buy cable modems as that would press folk into becoming even more involved with the networking. I gave it my best shot to see if it's some WiFi oddity with the wired test but many dig in their heels and we can't get a good bead on where the issue lies.

I will share I prefer old school modem sans WiFi/router. Then add a router of my choice after that. All in ones tend to be problematic.

Cox Said It Was Compatible

Yeah, I would not have gotten the C3700 if Cox had not said it was compatible. Bummer.

It was.

There was some performance issue. Since it wasn't their gear...

I'll share what I prefer is the old modem then add my choice of router.
