Resolved Question

Netflix no receiver sound to Samsung 8550 4k

Jan 4, 2015 5:03AM PST

I get no receiver sound when streaming Netflix to my Samsung 8550 4k tv. The receiver is Onkyo 838 4k.
I am only using the HDMI ARC connection.
Do I need to adjust a tv setting or do I need an optical connection.
I currently have to change to tv speakers to hear Netflix.

I have the same exact problem with my 8550. I have it connected via the hdmi1 port to my Onkyo receiver. I cannot get the sound through my receiver out to the external speakers. I have done extensive research on this but have come up empty. I called Samsung, awful customer support. They said they would have someone from advanced tech support call me but they never did.
I give up at this point.

Actually I've found ARC over HDMI to be hit or miss.

No one seems to stand up and claim they will fix it if it doesn't work.

Two part solution to the problem.
1) The ARC connection on the Samsung 8550 is actually HDMI 4 not HDMI 1 as it appears. I changed the connection to HDMI 4 but still no sound on Netflix, You Tube etc.

2) You have to enable the "CEC" feature on the Onkyo 838 receiver setup menu. In addition to enabling CEC devices this also activates the "ARC" feature which allows for return sound. This is on the setup menu. I found it in the e basic manual on line.

I Now have great sound from all Internet sources Netflix, You Tube, etc!!!

Answer
ARC is, again, hit or miss.

Try calling Samsung first then adding the usual 6 or less dollar link.
