does anyone know if you can stream HD quality movies from netflicks?

also does any of the movies streamed in SD have dolby digital sound?

Yes

But the quality is (I believe) only 720p thus far. From what I remember at a friend's house, it still provides a little less PQ than Blu Ray regardless of what resolution it says it is.

The biggest bummer from what I also recall is that everything is only stereo audio and no surround whatsoever, at least not yet. Someone please chime in and correct me if this is no longer the case. Hopefully this will change so I can try it out.

It is 720p but its also crushed with lots of compression.

It looks OK but you won;t confuse it with quality 1080p signal. Unfortunately I have not found the HD streams to be very reliable. Even with my xbox 360 hardwired to an 8 Mbps cable modem the stream drops down to SD after a few minutes.

The sound is just stereo for right now.

The Apple TV....

streams 720p or 1080i and does have 5.1 Dolby on their HD streams. It may still be a step ahead of Netflix on picture and sound quality as the picture is far better than standard def. In fact, for whatever reason, I get a little better picture and sound quality from my Apple TV than I get with Time Warner On Demand. It's very convenient which I value but it isn't blu ray quality.

I haven't had much better

luck with my Apple Tv for streaming. Buffering is still an issue with HD video podcasts and even movie trailers. The movies are better than those on Watch Now but the limitations and the relatively hight price (compared to a Netflix plan) means I just don't use it to rent stuff very often at all. I rent a movie once every several months at most.

Most of what I watch is still DVD and Blu-ray rented through Netflix. Its not as high tech as on demand and streaming but it works consistently and its quite affordable.

cable vs apple

Something works better than a cable company offering(?) Now there's a surprise <sarcastic grin> Wink.

I always wondered about Apple TV. That's good to know at least they have their audio down pat.
