Question

netbook wont start up

Jul 11, 2012 1:55PM PDT

Toshiba NB255-N245
Atom processor
Windows 7 starter

My laptop was working fine, then I shutdown normally and was gone for about 45 minutes. When I came back it was still at the final shutdown screen (where it says 'windows is shutting down' and has the blue logo in the background). I forced shut down by holding the power button. When I went to turn it on the power icon came on but nothing else did. I tried the reset soulution (unhook ac and battery, then hold the power button for 60 secs and then hook backup and turn on) all that did was enable the fan and the icon next to the battery icon to turn on for like 2 seconds but then it stops. Not quite sure what to do. Any help is apprectiated.

Answer
Usually a bad sign.

Try the battery pull again and if it's easy, with the battery out, remove the RAM and stick it back in. Same for the HDD.

That's about it for the easy stuff. After that we look at if the charger is working, etc.

Exact same prob on Sony VPCM125AG

Just today I have the same symptoms - tried the battery pull out - not at all sure how to access the RAM or HDD - tips would be useful. My Sony netbook has a slidy swith on the front edge which I have always disliked, and I was thinking it was maybe a mechanical switch issue.
Hope somebody comes up with some more suggestions or an explanation? It's less than two years old this netbook, and though it is by far the nastiest slowest computer I have ever owned, (and with the most hopless OS Win7 Starter), it's useful as a radio. Mine had (legitimately) gone into one of its levels of standy, and I had expected to wake it up using the spacebar, but when the green light wasn't on I tried the switch and got the same few seconds of HD activity then zilch.

BTW I cannot find a way to search the netbook forums on CNET anymore - it used to be very easy, so I expect I'm missing something.

The search box is at the top right.

But when I want to find disassembly information I use google.

Great, fixed, thanks very much

Well, with a bit of help from a notebook forum where somebody mentioned the two invisible screws which one has to uncover on this machine, decided the ram was just to tightly embedded to chance removing it - so removed the hard disk, plugged it in back again very firmly, and bingo - it works again!

Sure aziel_3339,

But at this point after nearly a year (348 days since you posted) it needs repair. We covered the easy self help items but beyond this you get a quote on repair.
