net working two computers

Aug 11, 2004 11:03AM PDT

I have a laptop and my husband will be using his pc and we will be connected to adsl with a router. Will this slow down our adsl download time for each computer? And what is the best router to use and how easy is it to hook up? Will we both have to the version of a virus protection on each computer. I will be using my laptop to connect my company?s server.

1. No. The ADSL will be at the same speed. You just may have to share the bandwidth. The actual DSL speed will be exactly the same. But each might get 1/2 if both are making demands. If one is not, then the speed is pretty much the same as if there was 1 machine.

2. Cisco makes the best routers, but they can run a few thousand. The rest of us will use Linksys, Dlink and items we see at the stores. I find such very easy to setup.

3. Are you revealing you have a machine without an Antivirus? If so, run to the Security forum and ask about that. If you don't have such, at least you can look up FREE AVG on google.com to get something now.

1. ok then I guess it will slow us down a little.

2. and Yes, we do have antivirus protection.

3. I just want a simple -- but high quality router. I still have no idea how to set it up but guess when I go shopping for a router they will explain it to me...

Thanks, ST

I yet to see any "quality" difference between Linksys, Dlink and a few others.

Maybe you can tell what would diffentiate one from another, but I have and use many. If I get the Cisco at the office, now they do "quality" but you pay for it.

To set it up, I open the box and read the instructions. Of course some would call that cheating.

After reviweing several articles in various pcmagazines and talking to associates, I found that linksys was the best router for my needs. Thank you.

Wow seems to be alot to learn! Guess, I better get prepared and do a little homework on how this all works. It seems a little over-whelming at the moment but hopefully with time and patience I will get this hooked up!

Thank you!
