Nero 7 Ultra

Nov 5, 2005 1:16AM PST

XP Pro SP2 Media Center subset

Bringing you all up to speed.... Media Center (live tv) has quit working & System Restore no longer works either. Am trying to back up data so can begin repairs. Bought external hard drive and 'think' have valid backup using Nero even though varification failed. http://www.fototime.com/CFB0D51940FE548/orig.jpg Decided to do another backup of just my videos and put on DVDs.

After 9 hours and 16 DVDs got to this point: http://www.fototime.com/679D830EE8791A5/orig.jpg

Disc 16 after burning some gets spit out with this message: http://www.fototime.com/5EC497AE300127F/orig.jpg

No clue as to what or where "the source disc" is (after trying DVD #1 and reinserting #16) so clicked Cancel and got this: http://www.fototime.com/88D271A8266D430/orig.jpg

So... I guess now have 16 new coasters? What should I have done/do?

Look up Acronis.

There may be a reason for Nero to fail, but I don't trust Nero for backup duties.

Besides, the OS has issues so Nero will have issues.

Bob,

I did trial Acronis. (info in a diff thread) Chose Nero and am now stuck with it and am trying to make the best of what I now have. Ditto the XP - Media Center.

All advice welcome!

Did you make the call?
Nov 5, 2005 5:51AM PST

What did their support phone or email write?

Sorry, I didn't find Nero backup to work here so I bailed out last year. Back then it had this "too new" feeling. At least I was able to get a refund.

Bob,

No. And here's the reason... IIRC they give only two weeks free support starting when you make the first call. So I figured that I would save the free support for really tough questions & try to get answers to newbie questions on user forums. Might be a good strategy and might not.

Let me be blunt ?

I found Nero backup unreliable and to fail.

It didn't seem ready for the market.

Ask for a refund and try something else.

Backup Utility for Windows

Is this reliable?

Yes, but is from a long time ago.

While it's reliable, it only supports tape drives.

Error returned while creating the volume shadow copy
Nov 6, 2005 4:15AM PST

Bob,

Well, I tried it anyways. (backup to external hd) Just a single file maybe a mb or two. Failed. So tried similar backup to my C drive and got same error message. The Windows Backup Wizard did put a folder on the external hd. http://www.fototime.com/6D550BD67C9D018/orig.jpg Had the same error using Nero. This is what I get: http://www.fototime.com/B2503081911A434/orig.jpg When click on Report got the same error message when using Nero to external hd & Windows Backup to external hd and also to C drive: http://www.fototime.com/98ABE8B8E87B355/orig.jpg

Don't guess this is the right forum for this kind of question so will start a new thread elsewhere.

Thanks for all the help.

ACTUALLY YOU MAY HAVE FOUND A CLUE!

I'm wondering if the external drive in in FAT32 format. If so, backup programs will fail as they hit the 4GB filesize limit of FAT32.

Sorry if I missed that but it didn't pop out at me till your last post.

Ouch.
Nov 6, 2005 7:02AM PST

I think the bottom line is when the OS takes a dive, backup programs may fail as well.

BOOTABLE BACKUP CD programs like Ghost, Acronis sidestep all this by not relying on a possibly damaged OS.

Another item I carry with me is a KNOPPIX CD which I use to get files off of the toasted OS machines. Light review at http://tips.oncomputers.info/archives2004/0401/2004-Jan-11.htm

Sorry I missed the filesystem, but I am trying to find an issue to fix here.

I don't try to backup to DVDs. My backups all go to

harddrives. A fairly large, external, usb2 drive should be under $200.

Kiddpeat,

I bought a 160GB USB2 external hd a week ago for $120. Will be using that too. But since can buy Verbatim DVD+R or -R for less than 40

Good luck on storing them and keeping them straight.

I use Backup My PC, and have never had a problem with it. It can back up to anything you like including spanning DVDs and external harddrives.

You may be fetching the German language of the Knoppix DVD. The other looks fine.

Can't reinstall
Nov 10, 2005 12:21AM PST

Turns out Dell didn't ship os cds with the computers for I think 5 months and of course I'm included in that period.

And there is no os recovery tab in my Dell Accessories folder.

So... I guess reinstall is on hold for the moment. Took a 40 min 'live chat' with Manmeet to hopefully get Dell to send me the cd.

I'll be back..
