I have downloaded the file from driverguide.com and it is an exe file but if I try to run the file it says there is an error if I try to install the driver it says it cant find the file. Help what do I do with this file gow do I get it to be an inf file that it is looking for?

I see the problem. I've had the luck to clean install the 98se OS on just such a laptop. But I didn't get the drivers from driverguide, but now http://www.hp.com (was compaq.com.)

Why not go to the source?

I still dont have an answer to my problem...

I'll go to town, may come home later, sleep and now I'll take care of things, then make coffee and review if I can find a driver for your laptop.

If you want to fix this faster, go find the restore CD's for this model from HP. They sell them for some models still.

Be back later after some work.

Ways to resolve this.
Nov 30, 2003 9:03PM PST

1. Order the restore CD from:
http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/any/na/cpq/softwareList.jhtml?reg=&cc=us&prodId=compaqpres95003&lc=en&plc=&softitem=Microsoft%20Windows%2098&sw_lang=en&pagetype=software

2. Try other Neomagic drivers.
Surely a hit and miss affair, but this may be a lesson to
never lose the restore CDs. Some only learn this the
hard way.

In closing, I remember reloading a 1260 laptop about 2 years ago. The web site had drivers, now it doesn't.
I don't collect such drivers since I don't care to maintain such a collection. My choice.

Firstly its not my laptop, I am sorting it for a kid so she can do her homework - it belonged to her father as a company laptop he brought it back from Hong Kong this summer after getting a new works laptop. So he never had the restore CD, plus I dont live in the US and the site for the link is a US maintained site not sure if I would be able to get the restore CD in the UK.

I have two Neomagic drivers but they both are exe. files and the laptop is looking for a .inf file, this is where I am struggling..

Any help appreciated

I have found more Neomagic drivers but they are .exe files and when I click on them to run them all it says is this is not a valid win32 programme. How do I install any of these drivers?

http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/codrus.html notes the older SP driver I think I used. The exe is run and files are extracted.

Your post reminds me of what happens to people who run download accelerators. Such often corrupt the download.

Sorry to read you can take advantage of HP's support. They have such in other countries, so check locally.

You do know Linux will install on this laptop? Current distros like Suse 9.0 have almost all the hardware support.

I think you were right Bob, I was using Star Downloader and it must have corrupted the files. When I downloaded them on my own laptop which doesnt have Star Downloader the files unpacked ok when clicking on them. Only problem is I tried to get rid of Star downloader and had to delete it manually now when I want to download anything on my desktop computer nothing happens so I cant download. Any ideas what that is all ablot?

Thanks

Have now managed to install the re-downloaded driver onto the laptop with success. Thanks Bob. I got there in the end and thats what matters.

Yes! That is all that matters. And now you know why I love those ...

Download Accelerators.

I've yet to find any that actually work without issues. I am NOT asking for others to comment on such. The issue is dead, closed and covered with ten loads of concrete and barb wire fencing...

Best of continued luck,

Wolliwuk, About That Download Issue...
Dec 2, 2003 1:46AM PST

If you're not able to download anything correctly, then the suggestions below will frequently fix that. Make sure to make a backup of your registry:

BROKEN DOWNLOAD PROMPT FIX:

If you click on "download" and no longer get a dialog box asking if you want to "save the file to disk" or "open from this location", how can you get this function back?

There are a few things you may want to try. One is to right click on the file you want to download and choose "Save target as..." and then it should prompt you to put it in a specific folder. This should revert your settings to prompt you to save to disk and place it in a
specified folder when you left click to download.

The other option is to check your registry settings. Go to RUN,
type REGEDIT and go to the following keys:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exe (filetype) and HKEY CLASSES ROOT\exefile
Double-click on EditFlags, and change the
value from d8 07 01 00 to d8 07 00 00, then close Regedit.

If that doesn?t help, then I suggest you click on the links below and try the registry edits indicated.

Here are the links and you might want to try this one first.
Error Locating Object Handler

A similar fix, but with fewer registry entries removed:
Error Message: Error Locating Object Handler

Check the Internet Explorer versions here too.
