The link worked; you saved me from having to buy a new printer! Next time you are in Sacramento, CA, you've got brewski on me!
I know it's been awile since you resolved your problem, but could you please tell me what you did in order to get your 7550 to work? I've gone to the hp website and get a message that my vista system already has a driver for the 7550 and the 5550, and I don't need to download anything extra. Yet it doesn't even recognize the printer, let alone print. Thank you very much.
You're correct. You don't need to download anything.. Read the link provided again. During the installation of the alternate printer driver, select the 5550 printer driver instead of the standard one.. The computer will then install the 5550 driver that is stored on the machine.
After following the instructions, you'll find a new 5550 printer in the "Printer" folder.
Hope this helps.

Your link walked me through every step needed and was successful! Many thanks!!!
HP recommends using the Deskjet 5550 driver on LPT1
Install the driver with the USB cable unplugged, then change the port to DOT4. Plug in the USB cable, and print a test page.
Works great!
find the info from HP at this link:

What port do I select if there are no DOT ports listed? I have LPT and COM and few strange others. Can someone please tell me what to do next? Thanks!
I used the deskjet 5550 and it works fine just pay no attention to the popup.
Also did some research and found out HP's remedy http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...=72891&lang=en
