Question

Need urgent help choosing hard drive

Aug 16, 2016 5:06PM PDT

I am customizing an HP Envy 15t. I am choosing between a 1tb 5400ram SATA with 256gb M.2 SSD or the 512gb PCle NVMe M.2 SSD. This will be my college laptop, which has to support my engineering programs on the laptop and support some movie streaming, and gaming.

I have this model.

It's a Asus ROG and I immediately swapped out the 128GB SSD M.2 for the 500GB Samsung M.2.

With all my Visual Studio and such I have over 200GB free. If you go with the 256GB that will work too but you'll have to manage installs and where you store your files.

Me? I just want it to be easy. So I bought the Samsung M.2 card and moved up a notch.

Do you think that 512 gb would last me a long time? Also, how difficult is it to switch between the two hard drives if I get the 1tb sata with 256gb ssd. I'm just getting into learnig about these various laptop specs based on the fact that I'm now getting my own laptop. One of the most confusing aspects for me is figuring out the ssd vs sata vs hdd hard drive type of topics.

I could "manage" with the 256GB M.2

But for me I like to use my PC so I switched out the drive in the first few days. This does have the usual second 1TB HDD and if you want to put files on the second drive, no big deal. Just do that.

My reply is to show what space I'm using with all the usual "load of stuff."

A Suggestion

Hi there.

It depends on what you'll need more in your opinion - storage space for mass media and games, or faster performance.

With the dual storage configuration you will be able to access and manage your data and installations easily (installations with Custom Install and the downloads via the settings of your browser.torrent client). On the other hand 512GB will fill up fast, but you can get an external storage to put your mass data.

Hope this helps a bit and feel free to ask any questions you may have! Happy
