That's either not what they said or they were inaccurate.
MANY Compaq's put the setup program on the hard disk. If you replace the hard disk, you don't get the setup program. On top of that, this program is SPECIFIC to you make/model and any "Compaq" pull will not do.
But all is not lost. You can start at http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/Armada/us/family/model/1006.html?submit.y=8&submit.x=9&lang=en&cc=us to see if they have this for download.

I have a compaq armada e500. The hard drive went south and I need a new one. Normally this would be a straight forward process. I spoke to a tech rep at Toshiba that said compaq installs firm ware into the upper memory of the drive and without it the computer won't recognize the drive. THe drive is MK2016GAP but it must have the following on it too;HDD2154F or HDD2154L. DOes anyone have one they pulled? THanks
