What's in task manager at 100%?
Let's hope you don't report the idle process since that means we get to cover a basic Windows item.
Bob
I have WIndows XP home edition version 5.1
(Build 2600.xpsp.080413-2111 : Service PAck 3)
I have run it for a long time and do not have any disks - I think it came already installed, although the little info window says (c) 2007, and That is much more recent than the computer itself.
The computer is a desktop and not internet enabled
For about the last year the following anomaly has occurred:
When I switch the desktop on it leads me to the select a user screen (we have 2 accounts), and then loads the desk top for the selected account. I leave it a few minutes while I boot up my internet connected laptop. Then I select hearts on the desktop and it takes about 20-30 seconds to start, if I try to do anything else (Word, Excel) after this slow start it is really in treacle uphill mode, so I Quit hearts, log off, select Turnoff computer, then select Restart and everything works fine - speed OK. If I look at performance monitor when it is running like treacle uphill I find CPU usage at 100%.
I do not see why restarting should make any difference to the booting up process. I used to physically switch off and on again after 20 secondes to get the same effect, but one day I tried restart without actually switching off and it worked.
This is not such a major problem as to lead me to drastic re-installation measures, but it is annoying and if anyone could point me at some small tweak which gets around the initial slow running, I would be grateful.
