Need to replace my son's computer, help with my decision

Nov 11, 2004 11:02PM PST

I'm really in a dilemma. Unfortunately my laptop and my son's desktop have decided to kick the bucket at the same time and I can't afford to replace both. He doesn't use his to much more than download and play music and instant messenger and maybe play a few games nothing major. He surf's the internet. He's not a power user. The laptop is the power machine and I plan to put more money into that replacement.

I'm looking into replacing the tower with: ( keep in mind he has 700 mghz machine at this time)
amd sempron 2400 1667 ghz 256 cache
512 ram
80 gb 7200 rpm 2mb cache hard drive
video card integrated 2d/3d grap accel.
soundcard is onboard high/quality ac97audiocard
52x32x52cD/RW
Integrated lan
6 usb's
Firewire IEEE 1394 PCI card

I have all the speakers/subwoofer/keyboard/monitor/mouse/operating system win xp professional.

Would this be ok for what he needs. If not what should I upgrade. I really appreciate any input.
Because I have to replace my 2 year old dell laptop and I'm lost without it.

Thanks
Joy

That should be more than enough for what he needs. What is the problem with the desktop and your laptop? A 2 year old Dell should last longer than 2 years. How long does the warranty last. Exactly what is the laptop doing thats wrong? Give me details. If you insist on buying new. check out http://www.pricewatch.com/

It is the going rate for a pepair shop. Its highway robbery! I have just started my own business just for that reason. I am looking toward the home and small business market. I would of charged about $50 not $200. I think you can fix it yourself. For $20 what would be the harm in trying? skip
