Need to remove progs from start in XP

Dec 3, 2003 6:53AM PST

I have XP Home and want to remove the icons in the systray (by the clock) and keep them from running a start-up. Sorry to ask such a dumb question but I can't get a handle on how to do it. Add/remove wants to delete the prog and I can't drag them out of there the way you can drag then in. Thanks for your help.

Start-Run-type msconfig-StartUp tab
you uncheck what you do not need.

Startup Cop

I am still using Startup Cop even in Windows XP. You install and then go to Start\progams and open it, You can turn the start up programs off,on or pack it for removal

You can download it at

Thanks Eugene but it seems that Start-Up-Cop is by subscription only. Just not for me. Thanks again.

Sorry.....I didn't know .

I didn't realize that it cost now. I am still using the free version that I downloaded for windows 98 and it works fine with XP!

The utility is "free" but the site now charges a subscription fee

If you can, try to disable the startup option in the program. If a program has an option set for startup, it may put itself back into startup the next time you run it.

Thanks Keith. Do you know anything about Quick Time?
I recently ran a movie sent to me a clicked on "newer version" when it popped up. Can I delete this new one and run the old (which dosen't show up in the task bar). If not how do I get into Quick Time to disable the 'run at start' feature?
Many thanks,
PJ

I have Quick time on my XP home computer and don't use it often. QT is a fussy program and don't like to shut off. Everytime you use it ,it reinstalls itself in start up. I have hidden the icon ,but can't remember how I did it.I think you will have to live with it running on startup,or remove the program.

'Particularly" -- where from are they loaded.

1. When you start Windows, dozens of programs are already running - many of
them invisible and running in the background. What are these programs?
Why are they running? Are they safe to run, or are any of them trojans?

Autostart Viewer allows you to see every autostart on your system, all
on the one screen. In addition, it gives you complete control over the
autostart references, and allows you to modify or delete them at will.

2. Key Features:

- Over 50 different autostart locations monitored!
- Right-click menu allows you to take complete control over each autostart
- Add New Autostart feature allows you to add new programs to automatically start
- Save/Print functions allow you to take snapshots
- Resizable, easy-to-use interface that shows every autostart on the one display
- All sizes, positions and settings are remembered

to remove icons/programmes from startup on XP, click the Start button, click Run, then type in msconfig, in top task bar of box that drops down, click Startup, then un tick all boxes that you dont want to run on start up, when you have finished, click apply, you will then get message that you need to restart your computer before changes can take place. be sure of what you do not want to run on Startup, if in doubt leave ticked or seek more experianced advice on what you dont need on startup
