Need to move a program. Plaese Help.

May 22, 2005 2:36AM PDT

I need help. I had a program on my old Windows 95 computer. I have lost the software to it. I just bought a new computer with Windows XP. I took the hard drive out of my old computer and put it into an USB enclosuer. I want to move the program over to my new computer. How do I move the program over from my old hard drive to the new computer?

This is exactly what they program you not to be able to do.

Programs rarely move. If it is essential to your business, then all this does is show a lack of planning. Sorry. There was attempts such as MAGIC MOVER, but such products eventually had to vanish since they had people calling in to report programs that didn't move.

Too bad you didn't name the program so others can help you find it again.

Try this. Put the drive back in the old machine and try one of the last program movers out there. Its called ALOHABOB. I leave it to you to use google.com to find it.

NO! You need to install a netowrk card to move it over with ease. Yes, that is CHEAP.

Adventomega,

The things to do:

Use Explorer to
- copy the folder in Program Files
- copy the dll's the install put elsewhere (if any)
- copy the data
Use regedit to
- export (on the old computer) and import (on the new computer) all registry keys associated with this program (if any)
Some of this will be undocumented, I fear.

Or buy a new version of this program and move only the data.

Good luck,

Kees
