Need to have audio capture recording software get levels

Mar 30, 2010 9:16AM PDT

Hi again:

Thanks for the quick help on the first issue and now number two. New computers (this one a laptop) have pros and cons!

I do a lot of music editing and recording. There are a couple of programs I use and they are not able to function at the moment because of at least the situation how computers recognize USB connected speakers compared to the old fashioned ones that looked like a patch-cord was attached. Anyway here we go please:

When you try to record a sound on the computer (anything from an exiting file or capturing sound from a site)you don't get the choices of:
What You Here
Line In
Midi
CD/DVD

If I plug in the USB external speakers no level at all and no sound for playback. If I unplug them and use the internal speakers I have the same issue. Are there settings to help this or some kind of free program that makes the computer think the sound is fine and not confused by USB or any internal laptop configuration?

What can I do please so that Goldwave can recognize any sound from any source to give me a recording level and choice of source? Is there a free solution? If not what is the option. Any help free or paid is appreciated.

Thanks again,
Craig

Sorry no.

Even Goldwave tells you the following on their site -> "GoldWave Inc. is not able to (and will no longer) provide any support related to this issue."

Later they show the usual fix at http://www.goldwave.com/faq.php#recnet

Just wondering. Is Goldwave's answer unacceptable?

Answer for R. Proffitt and others
Mar 30, 2010 10:09AM PDT

Hi R. Proffitt:

Thanks for response. Somebody that works with Goldwave and has been very nice over the years told me off site that there would be a solution but it is only a 50 percent fix.

The suggestion was to download either as a trial or a purchase Total Recorder. They mentioned it would act as a middle man and let any sound on any computer be recognized by any audio recording capture software with or without USB speakers.

The idea was the sound would be taken from the source (say the internet) and it would go to Total Recorder which would fool the capture program into thinking there is no such as thing as USB. The option would appear in the recording choice of the audio capture.

It does appear in the recording choice but comes up as Total Recorder Microphone and you get no level during the recording or playback.

If you take the extra step to use Total Recorder as the capture it will record the sound, you save it, and then have to open the file in another program for editing.

Does anyone you associate with no a way around this?

Thank you for your time,
Craig

Unless

Unless we add more hardware my answer is no. I like the old VU meter I got from radio shack years ago. I never had much need to use it till recently but this is where it could be very well used.

As you revealed and Goldwave's support notes, Total Recorder is a work around to changes in Windows and today's machines.

And you are right about the USB audio output. Since it's all digital there is unlikely a clean way to record what's in the digital pipe so we are back to the old analogy solutions.
