Need some help!

Dec 12, 2003 8:01AM PST

For some reason, every time i open up my "music files" folder, the way it is viewed keeps changing back to the "large icons" setting, rather than the "details" setting that I normally have it under. This happens each time i open up the folder, and it REALLY is aggravating. Any help would be great. Thanks!

BigB, A Little More Information is Always Helpful

Whenever posting questions on these forums, please give us as much information about your computer as possible. Information needed is: operating system, processor speed, amount of RAM install, EXACT error messages you are receiving and any other stuff that might help. The more information you give us, the better informed our answer will be. Enough of that, back to your question.

Have you tried???? ....Opening the folder in question, clicking on "View" in the upper left, choose the type of icons you would like. When that's done, click on "Tools", (on some operating systems it's the "View" menu again), choose "Folder Options", then click on the "View" tab. When that loads, scroll down and place a CHECK mark in the "Remember each folders view settings". Click on "Apply", then OK.

Hope this helps.

Sorry, if you couldnt tell i'm new to this website. Anyways, I have windows ME on a dell desktop with 384MB of RAM and a pentium 4 processor. I dont get any error messages, and yes, I have tried doing what you told me. Once I hit the "x" to close out of the folder, the next time i open the folder the settings are back on "large icons" (for view) rather than "details" as I set it to. I'm nearly positive that this is some sort of virus b/c recently I've had to run "spybot - search and destroy" to get rid of them. I run "spybot" now and it says my computer is clear of virus', but I think it might be one it is'nt programmed to get rid of. Any help would be great.

Viruses And Spyware Can Cause Issues
Dec 13, 2003 4:23AM PST

Please click on the link below and run the programs listed there. Before running the programs, please temporarily disable System Restore using the instructions below:

http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6132-0.html?forumID=32&threadID=1313&start=0

To disable Windows Me System Restore:

1. Click Start, point to ?Settings?, and then click ?Control Panel?.
2. Double-click the ?System? icon. The System Properties dialog box appears.

NOTE: If the System icon is not visible, click "View all Control Panel options" to display it.

3. Click the ?Performance? tab, and then click ?File System?.

4. When you're finished running the programs, then re-enable System Restore.
____________

Although the online Housecall virus scan must be done in regular Windows, the other programs, such as Stinger, Spybot and Ad-Aware do a better job if you allow them to run while in "Safe Mode".

Hope this helps and let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the help Mark, but that didn't work. None of the other things I've tried have. And I also found out it's not just with my "music files" folder, but with every other folder I have. whatever view i set them to, the next time I "x"(close out of) the folder, it sets the view back to "Large Icons." I've tried the adaware program, spybot search and destroy, stinger, and norton anti-virus and still not luck. If anyone has ever had the same problem, or know any possible solutions, please help!

BigB, Have You Tried?
Dec 13, 2003 12:11PM PST

...opening the folder, click on "View" in the upper left, choose "Customize this folder", then in the "What kind of folder do you want" section (at least XP has this), choose "Documents" instead of "Music". Place a CHECK mark in the "Apply this template to all subfolders". Click on "Apply", then OK.

If that doesn't get it done, you might read the entire thread at the link below. Although the discussion is referring to Windows XP, it should also apply to Windows ME. Because this involves a registry edit, make sure to create a backup of the registry before making the changes. Read the entire thread but specifically there's a post by "Darrell" which disusses at fix talked about at the Microsoft New site:

Hope this helps.

Such a simple question requires a simple CORRECT awnser lol.
START
CONTROL PANNEL
FOLDER OPTIONS <-- DOUBLE CLICK TO OPEN IT
HEADER CHOICES.... GENERAL VIEW FILE TYPES
SELECT "VIEW"
SCROLL DOWN TO "REMEMBER EACH FOLDER'S VIEW SETTINGS" AND UN-CHECK THE BOX.
NOTE: IT THIS BOX ISNT CHECKED WHEN YOU ARRIVE .... THEN YOUVE FOUND THE PROBLEM. LOL
CLICK ON "APPLY" AND DO NOT CLICK ON "OK"
THEN, GO TO EACH AND EVERY FOLDER THAT DISPLEASES YOU, OPEN AND CONFIGURE EACH ONE.
AFTER A FOLDER IS AS YOU LIKE IT, RIGHT CLICK ANYWHERE AND SELECT "REFRESH" (OR CLICK ON "REFRESH ON THE TOOLBAR)
AFTER REFREASHING A FOLDER MINIMIZE THE FOLDER
"DO NOT CLOSE THE FOLDER" ....
OPEN THE NEXT FOLDER, CONFIGURE IT, REFRESH IT, MINIMIZE IT,
OPEN THE NEXT FOLDER, CONFIGURE IT, REFRESH IT, MINIMIZE IT,
ETC... ETC... ETC...
WHEN YOU HAVE DONE "SOME" "MOST" or "ALL" of the folder/folders THEN GO BACK TO "FOLDER OPTIONS" AND RECHECK THE BOX
"REMEMBER EACH FOLDER'S VIEW SETTINGS"
CLICK "APPLY"
CLICK "OK"
THEN CLOSE "ALL" THE MINIMIZED FOLDERS THAT WERE RECONFIGURED AND REFRESHED. AND YER DONE!
AMAZEING LOL

NOW FOR AN EXPLAINATION AS TO WHY THIS METHOD IS EXACTLLY THE SAME AS THE METHOD LARRY SAID EXCEPT I TOLD YOU TO TAKE SOME EXTRA STEPS.
AUTOMATIC SETTINGS WILL OVERRIDE MANUAL SETTINGS!!
CLICKING ON THE "APPLY TO ALL FOLDERS" or the "RESET ALL FOLDERS" IS THE HIDDEN AUTOMATIC SETTING, ONLY WAY TO OVERRIDE IT IS TO MANUALLY UN-DO EACH AND EVERY FOLDER INDIVDUALY USEING THE SEQUENCE I PRESCRIBED.
DAMN IM GOOD LOL

From Explorer/My Computer, click View, Folder Options, View and place a radio button dot in the space Show all files. If a check mark exist in the box for Hide file extension for known file types, remove it. Click the box near the top of the applet labeled Like Current Folder (Click to see an example screenshot), click Apply, and then click OK to Exit. However, be aware that when you customize a folder and then attempt to apply the same customization globally for all folders, all of the customization options applied to the original folder may not be applied globally to all folders, [Q232743].

1. As you may note from this "Microsoft WindowsME" article, if the procedures described in the prior comments do not work, you have a serious problem in the system registry.

2. The following is my last and only recommendations, and may not work either:

a. Reset defaults for all folders: View menu -->Folder Options -->View tab Reset All Folders

b. Reset defaults for view settings: View menu -->Folder Options -->View tab Restore Defaults

c. Set new defaults for all folders: View menu -->Folder Options -->View tab -->Like Current Folder

d. Remember each folder's view settings: View menu -->Folder Options -->View tab

2. Please note: From my experiences, this is how I perceive Explorer View:

a. When you clear the check box for Remember each folder's view settings, the following happens:

b. When you start Explorer, the first folder you view displays in the folder's saved view. Windows holds that view in temporary memory and applies it to all the folders that you visit while Explorer remains open unless you manually alter the view.

c. As you browse to other folders (after the initial folder is opened), the saved view for each folder is ignored, and when you quit Explorer, the folder view that you have been using to view multiple folders is deleted from temporary memory.

How did you access the folder ? Most probably, you accesed it via Windows Explorer. Try doing it via My Computer. When you have opened the folder with all those big files icons staring at you, try arranging the icons using the different ways available. Try also the different 'folder views' i.e. on line view, classic Windows view, etc. One question- what about other folders-same problem ?

Addendum
Dec 31, 2003 11:22AM PST

If it happens only to the 'music folder' then the folder or files therein may be 'corrupted'. So, try:
1. Create a new folder and copy and paste the music files to the new folder and see whether the problem is also copied.

2. Check for long file names of the music files and try renaming those which are too long.

Hope this helps.

Happy New Year !

Actually, its a problem with all folders. I've run Norton Anti-Virus scan, spybot search and destroy, and adaware to name a few. Nothing ever comes up. Also, in response to your previous query, i opened it by double clicking since its on my desktop. I also doubt its the length of some file names b/c i had them on for a long time - this just happened all of a sudden. I'll try out your methods right away.

My reply didnt "land" where I thought it would, so ck out my other reply. The manual settings vs automatic settings is the problem. And I suggested the simple, easy, and possiblly the only way to solve this minor problem without all the hasles. Hope you ck back soon! Good luck. Dont confuse the issue with Norton, spybot, Adware etc etc etc its a design problem or better yet a lack of design within the system. My personal experiance with it was exactlly like yours and it worked for me. Cheers!
