I"m going to try this....
Jan 4, 2011 12:19AM PST

Just picked up the LN46C600 at BB last night... after looking long at the LN46C630. Some say the sets are the same (inclding a post I saw somewhere where the author claimed to have been told by a Samsung service rep. that they were identical components - with different wrapping.) I'm a bit skeptical that they are exactly the same - and a side by side compare on the Samsung site would indicate some differences, e.g. 100,000:1 vs. 120,000:1 contrast - no PIP on C600 - etc. And in this day and age there are just so many components where Samsung may have cut some costs. But, my judgement (and hope) is that they have essentially the same guts, with a few less features on the 600.

So - until I get my calibration DVD from AMZ - I'm going to try the CNET settings for the LN46C630 posted in this forum under the link: http://forums.cnet.com/7723-19410_102-408461.html?tag=mncol;4f

I figure there is a pretty good change it will get me much closeer than I am now as a starting point... and then I can tweak later.

follow up
Jan 8, 2011 2:23AM PST

A follow up on the post above - I did calibrate my LN46C600 last night using the settings for the LN46C630. Watched BD of The Dark Knight and Cars (albeit with component connections yielding 1080i instead of HDMI w/ 1080p.) Settings worked pretty good - and as expected were a significant improvement form out of box. Perhaps a little dark overall for my taste and a bit lacking in shadow detail in TDK. I have my DVE calibration disk on the way, and will be interested to see any changes that might result from that approach.

That being said - this set will be going back to BB. It has quite significant flashlighting problems that cover about 20% of the screen from left side - and notable on the right also, although not quite as bad. Saw an AMZ review that had almost identical issue (on the LN46C630)and he went through 2 sets before giving up on this model. (screen lot # on his and mine is AA04) I'm willing to try a replacement if BB is open to that - but if the same problem occurs then they'd just have two open box sets to try and sell. So, either I'll end up with another 46C600 hoping for a better screen... or I'll be looking at plasmas.
