Need repair cost guesstimate/advice on digital camera repair

Mar 31, 2005 12:47PM PST

It was only a matter of time, but, yes, I dropped---and broke---my new Sony Cybershot DSC-P10 digital camera.

Landed on the lens and now the lens assembly is cockeyed and jammed into place. The lens will not retreat into the body of the camera when turned off, nor conversly, when turned on will the camera boot up.

Help! I need my camera for my Photojournalism Final at school in less than two weeks---and, most importantly, before my Pops, who bought it for me less than a month ago, finds out.

Need to know what, who, where (I am in Dunn, N.C., between Raleigh and Fayetteville on I-95), how long, and most importantly, how much this is gonna cost---ASAP.

Help me please! Somebody? Anybody?

Forever grateful, Shrappy

Sound really scarry when you drop the camera like that. I'm not sure whether the damages were only to the lense & its inside mechanics. Normally the compact digital camera lense is placed very close to the CCD sensor. If the damages are spreaded to the sensor, it will definitely cost you a lot. Personally, I don't suggest a replacement in your case. Normally CDD part costs around $1-200 - without labor costs, depended on the model and specification.

I really have no idea how much the lenses will cost; it depends whether how many lense parts and internal mechanics were damaged. The cost of repairing is possible to overrun the cost of new camera. I'm positive that it will take longer than 2 weeks to get it fixed. ANy way, check out with Sony Service Center nearest to you.

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2003_reviews/p10.html lists it from 189 to 299 for the full price of this camera. Given what repairs cost these days in the US, I'll write that it's a hard lesson about not dropping things. I've made a keen point of using that LASSO or LANYARD to keep such a disaster from happening to me.

Even then, you can read my post about my camera failure. I know repair costs so you can see my solution.
