Need recommendation for a P&S camera

Dec 29, 2010 2:42AM PST

I have no experience with digital cameras. I want a camera for a dummy. I want to spend around $300 (more or less). The camera will be used indoors and out primarily to take pictures of people and dogs. I do want built in video capability. Any suggestions woill be most apreciated.

There are many good choices in that price range.
But it would help if we knew your likes/dislikes.

What size camera do you prefer?
Large, Medium, Compact, subcompact.

Do you have a zoom preference (3X, 5X, 10X, larger)?

Many cameras now have HD (high definition) video.
...Does that interest you?

I went a camera with the least amount of bells & whistles. Not being knowledgable about cameras limits me in choosing likes & dislikes. I want a very good picture, a large playback display and one that will take good indoor pictures.

I don't want a large camera (the smaller the better) as long as I can get a good picture.

HD is of no importance to me.

It depends upon what you mean by good indoor pictures.

The Canon A495 is an entry level camera ($135) that takes very good pictures.
But it (like 98% of the P & S cameras) will do well indoors as long as you use flash. If you want to take indoor pictures without a flash you need to take long exposures using a tripod.

If you want a camera that does well indoors without a flash, you are looking for that 2% of the cameras. They are all expensive ($350 to $500) and loaded with bells and whistles.

A small such camera will be the Canon S90 or S95.
