General discussion

need professional quality VHS/DVD to USB

Oct 6, 2007 1:25AM PDT

Hi, I have a little video-editing side business, and I need to buy a device that can take my VHS/DVD media (thru RCA jacks) to USB on my computer. It needs to be as high quality as possible. I'm looking to spend about $100. It needs to capture as AVIs, MPEG1's, and MPEG2's, and I'm planning to use Ulead Videostudio 10+ to edit- so it can't be tied up in it's own editing program.

Thanks for any replies!

How about a camcorder and firewire?
Oct 6, 2007 1:22PM PDT

Many camcorders perform a digitizing function if they have the usual video and audio input jacks. The firewire is noted in our camcorder why we use that and never USB.

would be nice

My camcorder doesn't have "analog in" (RCA) jacks. It's becoming hard to find one that does. Yes, I would prefer Firewire, but most TV tuner/analog converter devices seem to use USB. (don't ask my why)

would I really do best buying a less than $100 camera that has analog in + firewire out? I've looked at a lot of hauppauge and ATI products, but reviews say the drivers are outdated and the quality is subpar.

I have a Sony HC28. It has an "A/V out" jack, is there a way I can use it as an "A/V in" jack?

The quality is subpar because people are...

Not aware that NTSC video is ratty old stuff. It's impossible to call such "quality."

purchased ADS tech Video Xpress

I ended up with the ADS tech Video Xpress- it was reviewed to be simple and reliable, plus it uses Ulead software that I am familiar with. (comes with v. 9, I'll be using my own v. 10+) It also helped that I found it for only $40.
