Need prayers and angels for Toni Hackler again.

by Bignose / April 30, 2004 8:31 PM PDT

She is on her way to the hospital again with a possible heart attack.

Myself or her sister Ginger will keep you updated.

Hey Texas Bill, a little technical help for Toni

for when she gets out of the hospital..

I am an email, sometimes telephone friend of hers. She has told me for years that you are one of her forum favorites. I'm very familiar with your fantastic ability to search MSKB et al.

I had posted a question for her in The hardware forum regarding the fact that the brand new CD-R/RW burner in a new backup computer that she is assembling sees all CD's as Music CD's regardless of what they actually are. [she's using Win XP [but without SP1]. The Plextor DVD burner works fine.

Any ideas? She is still in the hospital and wanted to know if I found the solution to the problem so that she can fix it as soon as she gets home.

Robert Proffitt replyed, but Toni is wondering if anyone else remembers seeing the problem before. She thought that she had seen the problem and solution before, but forgot to save it into her tips files.

BTW Toni's status was updated in the SE forum yesterday.

XP and CD drives are ''madness'' IMHO.

1. Please read through:

a. "The AutoRun or AutoPlay Feature Does Not Work (Q330135)."

b. "System Cannot Access CD-Rom, CD-Recorder or DVD Devices."

2. The article [Q310123] lists 33 error codes that may be reported by Device Manager and provides possible resolutions. This [TechNet] article covers up to 49.

3. The article [Q314855] warns that by default, only users who are logged on to Windows XP with Power User or Administrator rights are allowed to install software. In Windows XP, files that have an .inf extension are considered to be setup information files. As a result, the Autorun.inf file does not run if you do not have Power User or Administrator rights. Therefore, when a CD-ROM is detected, Windows XP is notified that a new volume is available and the drive is checked for an Autorun.inf file. A user who is neither a Power User nor an Administrator is prompted with an "Install Program as other user" message when the CD-ROM autorun is processed.

4. Download and use the freeware utility "" for Windows XP Autoplay, which inspects these settings and offers a repair button to allow you to reset them to mostly default settings.
