Need Notebook purchase help

Sep 28, 2005 8:41AM PDT

I am thinking of buying a Panasonic Toughbook CF51 series Pentium M740 1.73ghz,256mb RAM,HD 40gb, WinXP Pro for my daughter going to college for $1500.00 hoping that this would last the next few years of college life. She does not do any gaming etc other than Office Applications, E-mail and Music. The reason for picking the Panasonic is for the durability, security and protection from drops etc. Please feel free to comment and advice. TIA

questions and memory
Sep 28, 2005 9:53AM PDT

What is the screen size?
What is the weight?
Battery life?

My initial reaction would be to recommend something with 512MB RAM, especially if there are shared graphics.

Sorry I missed responding to screen size

By the way the LCD screen size is 15ins, weight 6.6lbs and battery life approximately 4-5 hrs. Hope I have made myself clear.TIA

You really need a Toughbook?

Maybe upgrade to at least 512MB of RAM.

Toughbooks are made for extreme, extreme working environments, such as very wet or very cold places.

So long as your daughter won't abuse her laptop, I think a regular-durability laptop would suffice--provided that it is carried in a laptop bag.

Thanks for the response

I really appreciate the response to my query and hoping to upgrade the memory with an extra 1gb of memory totalling 1.2gb. Is this the right way to do ? The reason for the toughbook is that it is well built, comes with the Intel Sonoma 915 chipset and 533mhz FSB and Intel Pro 2915 Internal wireless. These are the standard features of this notebook at this price. Hope this will help make my decision soon. Please feel free to comment/advice. Thanks again.
