Question

Need new camera for taking action/sports shots.

Feb 23, 2012 9:53PM PST

I am looking for a point and shoot camera that will be good for taking fast action/sports shots. Both indoor and outdoor. I have no other requirements, no other preferences. My budget is $250 and under. Hopefully around $200. Thank you for your help.

Most digital cameras will work for action/sports shots outside during the daytime.

None of the point and shoot cameras will work well for action/sports in low light or indoors.

Here is what the professionals use for such conditions:

You must have a certain level of light before the camera can set the exposure correctly.

Fast shutter speeds (action/sports) require even more light.

Flash is no help because most point and shoot cameras flash will only illuminate about 12 to 15 feet in front of the camera.

I don't need what the professionals use. I am talking about taking middle school and high school sports pics of my family members! Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

Doesn't Matter

You are wanting to bring a knife to a gun fight. If small inexpensive cameras could capture indoor sports, there would be no need to make big expensive cameras. As snapshot2 said, compact cameras will be okay outdoors, but not for indoor sports. If you want to shoot indoor sports, on your budget a video camera is a better choice, because video is much lower resolution and moving, so noise and blur are not problems.
