Need more hard drive space!

Nov 6, 2004 10:15PM PST

In 2001 I purchased a desktop PC, with a P4, 1.6 GHz Processor, an ASUS P4B Intel i845 motherboard, with a 60 GIG hard drive, 512 MB PC - 133 RAM, an LG CDRW drive and a 16X DVD drive, running on Windows XP. I am also using WinFast VC 100XP for video capture.

I am trying various digital video editing programs to edit and create VCD's or DVD's from my digital video camera and from my VHS tapes. However, they consume most of my hard drive space when I download a VHS tape!

Looking for advice.... should I purchase and try to install another hard drive and dedicate it only to the editing process, and install a DVD burner? Or, do I buy a new computer with the higher speeds and larger hard drive?

Is there a consensus out there on which digital video editing software is easy to use, reasonably priced, and that enables you to edit inidvidual frames of a the film, and burns to a VCD or DVD without going to another program? I have tried at least 5 different programs and have yet to find one that does everything I want it to do?

Looking for good advice...thanks

I added both the larger HD (*one machine has an 120, the other an 16GB drive) and the DVD+/-RW drive.

Let me comment that I don't dedicate the drive space. That's your choice since I find the space suitable to lots of usages.

As to video editing, my needs are simple so I use the Ulead and MyDVD that came with the DVD recorders as well as the software that came with the DVCam. One notable software that I use that is freeware is VIRTUAL DUB (find with google.com). Since the software came with the devices, the price was reasonable.

For a 4 year old pc you are still reasonably up to date. I would invest in another hard drive and use it for storage. Dvd burners are coming down in price but, they will come down further so, I would wait if you can. What editing programs are you using? skip

Lower prices?

The last pair of Teac 8X all format DVD recorders landed at the office for 49 bucks each. I fear any lower price and they will last just 3 months (the warranty period).

How low is low enough?

8x is a little slow for me and, I would preper a cd combo with decent speed. check those prices.

That's 8X for DVD writing.

The CD recording is much higher. For today, you can go higher on DVD record speed, but I don't like the price of the 12X DVD media.

Your pocket!

I know its 8x for dvd writing. Thats a bit slow. I aslo know you can get a lot faster cd writing combo. The prices are still a bit high for the combo, with 16x dvd writing and a least 32x cd writing. those prices will still come down and speeds will get faster. therefore I would wait.

Sorry, but too rich for me.

Since the 4 and 8X media is cheap, buying a 16X drive doesn't make sense today. I'll give the office 8X DVD recorders at 49 bucks each for now.

I fear I don't want a lower price yet.
