Need Installation CD

Aug 26, 2005 12:14PM PDT

I recently purchased a tablet pc with MS Office XP 2002 Pro installed, but, I didn't receive the installation CDs.

The only application I really care about is Outlook, but my primary purpose for writing is because I am wanting to use the speech recognition software with Outlook. However, when I try to use it, I am told that feature is not installed and I need to insert my installation CD. Can someone tell me what is missing and is there an inexpensive way I can get this file?

Can anyone recommend how I can get this installed without purchasing MS Office XP? I already have the MS Office 2000 software, but it does not have the speech recognition software on it.

Also, has anyone tried the speech recognition and does it work?

Thanks for any help or ideas.

Try..

Looking around the menus for the laptop's maker to create RESTORE CDs. They often never often install CDs since it's not part of the license.

Too bad you didn't tell make and model number since a forum member could have known the answer. Also, why not call the laptop's maker support line?

Let me clarify...I purchased this M1200 Motion Computing Tablet PC used. That is why there were no installation CDs.

The MS Office software was not factory installed, rather it was installed by the previous owners of the tablet.

Should I just purchase the Outlook 2002 software? Would that be the best way to solve this problem?

If I do that, would I need to uninstall the exsisting Outlook installation and reinstall the new one, or can I just use the new CD to install the speech recognition function?

Sounds bad.

You should contact the laptop's maker and get those drivers and CD before you end up in the usual bad position of having to fork out 200 for the OS CD, hundreds for the Microsoft Office or parts there of.

-> There is no other legal way to do this.

It's your choice and work to get this straightened out, but the sooned the better.

"would I need to uninstall the exsisting Outlook installation and reinstall the new one, or can I just use the new CD to install the speech recognition function?"

As far as I know, Microsoft's CD will upgrade the installed version to the latest features. But now is the time to get your install CDs before you learn that expensive lesson later.

Thanks, Bob...Yes, Motion Computing has already sent me the installation CDs that I requested, so I have that covered.

I'm not too worried about MS office, because as I said, I currently have MS Office 2000.

All I really want to do, is try the speech function, but I guess maybe the only way I can do that is to purchase Outlook 2002.

Thanks for your help!

You can't imagine the problems you are avoiding. Oh the stories you read in these forums over missing laptop recovery CDs...

-> To really get ready do yourself one big favor and lookup BELARC ADVISOR. Run that, print the result and tuck it away with said CDs for a rainy day. The CD-KEYS have come in handy (and saved more money than you will with GECKO) when you least expect it.

Cheers,

Bob
