General discussion

Need help with wireless setup; info about the distances.

Jan 31, 2006 3:14AM PST

Hello, I am living in a two-floor house and I want to move my ADSL connection into wireless.
At the present I have the ADSL modem connected to a hub and the 3 PCs are connected to the hub. The PCs are on the upper floor and I am wondering whether placing the wireless router on the ground floor would be a working setup. I need the router on the ground floor in order for it to be near the TV so the cable-TV can be installed.
I am going for a 802.11g protocol router and I am asking if I would be able to have a stable-full speed internet connection.
Thanks in advance.

Where the ADSL line in is? and why 'Hub'?

The basic is:

Line in --> ADSL modem --> Router --> PC

or

Line in --> ADSL modem --> Router --> Access point --(wirelessly)--> PC

And you mention about Router and Cable TV??
I don't think it has anything to do with your network.

Yes I was not referring to the setup basically but for the distances I must be aware for the 802.11g protocol as I live in a two-floor home.
If I install the wireless router on the ground floor would I need a network booster for the 2nd floor_
And my cable TV is provided by my ISP and it needs the ADSL router, thats why.

You can put your wireless access point

somewhere near the area of the computer that will be using a wireless.

Most wireless only have about 50ft range (line of sight distance), so you will take into account any interference such as, Wall, large volume of water (water dispenser, aquarium etc.), Microwave, Cordless phone (2.4ghz type) and many more..

So, your ADSL Router and the TV can be in the ground floor, and your access point in the second floor. (pull a cable from ground floor (ADSL modem to the second floor (your accesspoint)

If hardwire is not possible, and you are forced to place the access point in the ground floor, then you might need a range expander/repeater.
