Need help with troubleshooting my network and Windows Office

Apr 16, 2009 11:54PM PDT

I am running Vista 32 Home Premium on both a desktop and a laptop. Both are connected to a Belkin wireless router via wireless network cards. I also have a secondary hard drive on the desktop that is se up to share across the network. In the advanced sharing properties it is set to allow everyone full control.

I am using Microsoft Office XP and have created an Access database on the shared hard drive in the desktop. Everytime I try to open it from the laptop I get an error message in Access that says it is unable to open it because it is locaed outside my intranet or in an untrusted location. I do not have any problems opening and modifying the other files on the drive from the laptop.

Any ideas on how to correct this without having to upgrade windows or access would be appreciated.

Please give the full and exact error message next time. Much easier to google than an erroneous one.

The full text seems to be: "This file is located outside your intranet or on an untrusted site. Microsoft Access will not open the file due to potential security problems."

Googling this message (enclosed in quotes) gives a nice number of nice hits. The only one I looked at had a solution:
http://bytes.com/groups/ms-access/571999-database-local-intranet-treated-untrusted-internet-after-ie7-upgrade, but it could well be other hits have other solutions. Only you can determine what works with you.

My guess is that the error will disappear also if you map the share to a drive letter. But that's just a guess.

Didn't you know that Google can be really helpful to find a specific phrase on the web? If it's an error message, most often a solution comes with it.

I appologize for not putting the exact error in my post, though you were right about the text. I also was not aware that I could put the error text into google and find a solution. The shared drive was already mapped before I started getting that message.

Thanks for the help. The workaround you linked did not fix the problem but it DID point me in the right direction.

I ended up having to go to tools, internet options, security, local intranet, and the sites button. Then under the advanced button I had to manually input the shared drive information ie //pc-name/drive-letter and that worked like a charm!

Thanks again!!!
