Need help with my messed up computer.

Jan 25, 2010 3:36PM PST

Last week my laptop (an HP Pavillion dv6000, running Vista) shut down while trying to install an update because the battery died. Ever since then I've been having problems. I decided to just back everything up and start over, rather than paying someone to fix all the problems. I got Windows 7, but every time I try to install it I immediately get the error code 0xC0000005 and don't know how to fix it. I was told to reformat my hard drive and try again, but my laptop came with Vista preinstalled. I don't have a disc, so Vista won't allow me to reformat my hard drive. If anyone has any suggestions on either problem- getting rid of my error code OR reformatting my hard drive, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: error

I googled the error (0xC0000005 windows install) and found a lot of post. The suggestion to clean the registry was ridiculous. In one case wiping the hard disk worked.

Unless your own scan of the same google results finds otherwise I suggest wiping the disk with DBAN or KILLDISK (download the iso, burn that to CD and boot from it). Then install Windows 7. Be SURE you've got all drivers needed (and that might be the difficult part).

Are you sure the laptop didn't come with a recovery disk? Didn't you make one? Google finds a lot of torrents to download one (but I don't recommend that; better order one from HP).
Doesn't the manual say anything about using a recovery partition? http://neosmart.net/forums/showthread.php?t=774 for example mentions the d:-drive as such for a dv6000.
Recovering Vista, then - if you prefer - upgrading to Windows 7 would solve the possible driver problem.

I found some posts too, but none of the ones I saw worked for me.

I'm sorry if some of my questions seem stupid, but I really don't know a ton about computers in general. How do I figure out what drivers I need?

The laptop didn't come with a recovery disc, and I didn't make one because... no one ever recommended it to me, and I wasn't aware of how to do it. There is a recovery partition, but I have absolutely NO idea how to use it at all.

Re: drivers and such

Drivers, if not on a DVD or CD that came with the machine, should be somewhere with HP. We've got a famous post here for some type of HP laptop that needed 10 different drivers from some unpublished ftp-site, that only HP Customer Service knew of.

If nobody here comes with the necessary details, I'd contact HP Tech support and see if they can point you to documentation about how to use the recovery partition or sent you the recovery DVD. Then back to Vista to start with.

dv6000 (and dv9000s)
Jan 25, 2010 9:49PM PST

Begin their descent to the end with such errors it seems. While it could be an OS or other soft issue, the trickle of failing dv6000, dv9000 machines is now a flood.

Google DV6000 RECALL to see if yours was recalled and given that model I'd never leave a file on it that I can't lose.

Hello darkpizza,

If you want to start from scratch, here is the steps:

Your best bet is a clean new installation to avoid any problems. Regrettably, you will have to re-install most of your programs.

Backup all of your data to an external hard drive or flash drive.

Install clean installation of Windows 7 and then keep the Windows 7 Product key. You can activate it via Phone Activation system and at the same time, the copy on the so called "old computer" *your old windows system is deactivated.
Phone Activation system
================================================
1. Click the Start button, type "SLUI.EXE 4" (without the quotation marks) in the search box, and press ?Enter?.
2. Select the neatest location, and click "Next".
3. Please click "Continue" when the User Account Control dialog-box appears.
4. The Windows Activation will generate a toll-free phone number. And the installation ID will be displayed in the following format:
xxxxxx ? xxxxxx ? xxxxxx ? xxxxxx ? xxxxxx ? xxxxxx ? xxxxxx ? xxxxxx ? xxxxxx
5. Call the number to activate Windows 7.

Let me know how it goes!
