Need Help with Mozilla Thunderbird

Hi ..I am using the operating system Win ME...2276 IBM and have just downloaded Mozilla Thunderbird 0.7.3. My problem for using this in place of Outlook Express is that Mozilla when on the internet keeps popping up. I close it and it comes up on its own, repeatedly. Does anyone have the solution to putting a stop to this? I am trying to enjoy this new piece of software but find the popping up whenever it feels the need very annoying..... Thank you.

I just close it and run it when I need it.

Thanks Bob for your reply. I just close it and it comes back on its own. I will be working on another program and Mozilla Thunderbird just appears. It is annoying. I would like to run it when I want it to run. Question:::
How do I stop this from happening???? Thanks.
