Question

Need help with laptop connectivity issues

Jun 27, 2015 7:12PM PDT

I have an older Dell Inspiron 1525 that I'm trying to set up for my nephew. It connects to my Wi-Fi, and says it is connected, but any browser I open it says it is not connected to the internet. I am stumped as to what it could be.

Answer
Can be very true if the antivirus expired.

I've run into that with Norton and other titles. Fixing varies with the AV.

Sorry but maybe it needs a full factory restore?

My antivirus is expired but would that change my ability to use the internet? Do I need the disc to do a full factory restore? I don't have one.

If it's expired. why not remove it and see what happens?
Note that uninstalling via Control Panel might not be enough. Then you need the makers removal tool to finish the job. It might save you a clean install of the OS.

And, of course, when Internet works, the first thing to do is to install another antivirus.

Again, Norton and others do this.

It's widely discussed so you have a known cause. Time to fix that.

Answer
when wifi is encrypted
Jun 27, 2015 7:27PM PDT

then it will connect to the signal, but not be able to access the internet. That only happens if the same encryption is used and the password, hex key, or other means of access is used. There is WEP, and several WPA methods. Find out which one your router is using. Look at a computer that is connected all through to internet and get that information, or access the router's internal program and get the info needed.

Hi James thanks for replying.

I'm not fully understanding what you're trying to tell me. I know my Wi-Fi password.

If you know the WiFi password.

James' answer isn't applicable.
