Maybe overanalyzing?

When I boot the Linux CDs (most versions) they offer tools to partition and format the partitions for me and install the boot manager.

Usually, when your questions come up, it is because you haven't tried to install Linux before.

hello,
I have installed linux before but i never did it for dual boot. i had to install linux as the only os on the machine so didnt have any trouble with the partitions. But now i want to install it as dual boot machine and as at partitioning i selected automatic partitioning and selected use the free sapce available but that didnt work

Try again.

And supply some error messages. Your reply is better in that you have told more about what is going on but fell short of any error messages.

Let me share that OpenSuse would install the boot manager without much ado as most distros will do. If you want to dive into a distro that requires the old ways then more power to you but I wouldn't.

Try a PCI USB card.

Sometimes you find a machine whose onboard ports don't work. I find that those 10 buck PCI cards do wonders at sidestepping the issue.

For me, I just use another distro. I'm agnostic or amoral about this. Your choice of definition as to having no feelings that Distro "X" is da'bomb.
